Neurofeedback for Autism

Many autistic adults and families ask about neurofeedback for focus, flexibility and calm. Here is a respectful, evidence-first look at the research, with links to every study.

How Neurofeedback Relates to Autism

Supporting Regulation, Attention and Connection

Brain activity in autism often shows differences in rhythm and connectivity, such as extra slow-wave activity, altered alpha, and differences in how brain regions coordinate. Neurofeedback reads these patterns in real time and rewards the brain, through a game, video or sound, when it moves toward a more regulated state. The goal is not to change who someone is, but to support skills such as attention, flexibility and calm.

The most-researched approaches are:

- Theta/beta training: supports attention and executive function.

- Alpha training: linked to social cognition and more efficient brain activity.

- Coherence training: aims to improve communication between brain regions.

- Slow cortical potential (SCP) training: supports self-regulation and attention.

Results are encouraging, but most studies are small and focus on children. We share both the promising and the cautious findings below.

Is Neurofeedback a Good Fit for You?

Why Autistic Adults and Families Explore It

- A non-invasive, medication-free approach that can sit alongside therapy and other supports.

- Sensors only read brain activity. Nothing is sent into the brain.

- Targets skills people often want help with, such as attention, flexibility and calm.

- Engaging: feedback comes through games, videos and sounds.

- At home with NeuFidelity: training in a familiar environment, monitored remotely by our team.

A FEW HONEST CAVEATS

- Most research is in children and teens; evidence in adults is limited.

- Many studies are small, and protocols vary widely.

- Neurofeedback does not cure autism, and it is not meant to change who you are.

- Wearing a cap can be uncomfortable for people with sensory sensitivities. Talk with us first.

HOW NEUFIDELITY APPROACHES IT

Every program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map. Protocols are matched to your own patterns, adjusted remotely as your data comes in, and checked with repeat assessments so you can see whether training is working for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you work with children? NeuFidelity currently serves adults 18 and over. Families of younger children should speak with a local provider.

Is neurofeedback a cure for autism? No. Research focuses on specific skills such as attention, language and social understanding.

How many sessions does it take? Studies ranged from about 20 to 60 sessions. Your plan depends on your brain map and progress.

Is the evidence settled? No. It is promising but still growing, which is why we personalize training and measure your results.

Is Neurofeedback Right for You?

Every NeuFidelity program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map, so your training is matched to your own brain. Talk with our team to see whether it fits you.

NeuFidelity provides non-invasive brain training. It is not a medical treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Individual results vary. Please consult your healthcare provider about any medical condition.
