When your mind won't switch off at night, the problem is often a brain stuck in daytime mode. Here is an honest look at the research on neurofeedback for insomnia and sleep problems, with links to every study.
of sleep, on average, for people who learned SMR training well in a 2022 at-home neurofeedback study.
reviewed in 2021 all showed better self-reported sleep, though results on objective sleep tests were mixed.
In a 2010 insomnia trial, only the home tele-neurofeedback group increased total sleep time measured in the lab.
Neurofeedback and CBT-I both improved insomnia in a small 2022 randomized comparison; neurofeedback reduced brain hyperarousal.
SMR training is thought to strengthen the circuits that create sleep spindles, a hallmark of stable sleep (2014 review).
Strong SMR learners also improved attention and working memory in a 2023 home study of adults with sleep problems.
Many people with insomnia have a brain that stays too alert at night, with excess fast beta activity and a weak sensorimotor rhythm (SMR), the rhythm linked to the sleep spindles that protect stable sleep. Neurofeedback reads these rhythms in real time and rewards the brain, through a game, video or sound, when it produces a calmer, sleep-ready pattern. Over many sessions, falling and staying asleep can get easier.
The most-researched approaches are:
- SMR training: strengthens the rhythm linked to sleep spindles and stable sleep.
- Beta down-training: quiets the racing, overactive brain at bedtime.
- Alpha and theta training: supports relaxation and the shift into sleep.
Self-reported sleep improves consistently in studies, while lab-measured results are more mixed. We share both the promising and the cautious findings below.

OPEN-LABEL STUDY | Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. A home SMR neurofeedback device improved sleep quality and insomnia scores; strong learners gained about an hour of sleep.
REVIEW | World Journal of Psychiatry. Twelve studies: all showed better self-reported sleep, but objective results were mixed and a placebo effect may play a part. SMR training looked most promising.
RANDOMIZED TRIAL | Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. Neurofeedback and CBT-I both improved insomnia and sleep quality in 17 adults; neurofeedback reduced brain hyperarousal.
RANDOMIZED PILOT | Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. In 17 insomnia patients, home tele-neurofeedback increased total sleep time, while muscle-tension biofeedback did not.
REVIEW | Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews. Explains how SMR training may strengthen sleep-spindle circuits and stabilize alertness, linking better sleep to better attention.
HOME STUDY | Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. In adults with sleep problems using home tele-neurofeedback, strong SMR learners also improved attention and working memory. Larger trials are needed.
- A medication-free approach that can sit alongside CBT-I and good sleep habits.
- Non-invasive: sensors only read brain activity. Nothing is sent into the brain.
- Targets the overactive, wired brain state that keeps many people awake.
- Engaging: feedback comes through games, videos and sounds.
- At home with NeuFidelity: train in the evening at home, monitored remotely by our team.
A FEW HONEST CAVEATS
- Self-reported sleep improves more consistently than lab-measured sleep.
- Many studies are small or open-label, and placebo effects may contribute.
- CBT-I remains the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia.
- Loud snoring, gasping or extreme daytime sleepiness can signal sleep apnea. See a doctor.
HOW NEUFIDELITY APPROACHES IT
Every program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map. Protocols are matched to your own patterns, adjusted remotely as your data comes in, and checked with repeat assessments so you can see whether training is working for you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can neurofeedback replace sleep medication? Not on its own. Talk with your prescriber before changing any medication.
How long until I sleep better? Home studies typically ran for several weeks. Your plan depends on your brain map and progress.
Does it work at home? Yes. Several studies used home tele-neurofeedback, which is how NeuFidelity works.
Is the evidence settled? No. It is promising but still growing, which is why we personalize training and measure your results.
Every NeuFidelity program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map, so your training is matched to your own brain. Talk with our team to see whether it fits you.
NeuFidelity provides non-invasive brain training. It is not a medical treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Individual results vary. Please consult your healthcare provider about any medical condition.
