Depression can feel like a brain stuck in low gear. Here is a balanced, plain-language look at the research on neurofeedback and heart-rate-variability training for depression, with links to every study.
versus controls (1.05) for bio- and neurofeedback in major depression in a 2022 meta-analysis, clearest in randomized trials.
with depression and anxiety improved on both after just ten neurofeedback sessions in a 2019 controlled trial.
of peak alpha training reduced depression and rumination and sharpened executive function versus controls (2020).
reviewed in 2023 found cognitive, clinical and brain-activity gains, supporting neurofeedback as an add-on to standard care.
A 2021 evidence review rated depression protocols 'possibly efficacious', held back by few controlled, replicated studies.
responds. A 2023 review found strong gains in only some patients, which is why we track your progress closely.
Depression is often linked with recognizable brain patterns, such as uneven alpha activity between the left and right frontal areas, excess fast beta tied to worry, and slower processing linked to rumination. Neurofeedback reads these patterns in real time and rewards the brain, through a game, video or sound, when it shifts toward a more balanced state. Over many sessions, the brain learns to hold that state more easily.
The most-researched approaches are:
- Alpha asymmetry training: rebalances left and right frontal activity linked to mood.
- High-beta down-training: quiets the fast activity tied to anxious rumination.
- Peak alpha frequency training: supports focus and flexible thinking.
- HRV biofeedback: paced breathing that steadies the body's stress system.
Results are encouraging, especially as an add-on to standard care, but responses vary. We share both the promising and the cautious findings below.

Your progress is tracked session by session, so you can see what is changing.
META-ANALYSIS | Psychological Medicine. HRV biofeedback and neurofeedback reduced self-reported depression in major depressive disorder, with the clearest effects in randomized trials.
CONTROLLED TRIAL | Journal of Affective Disorders. In 87 patients with depression plus anxiety, ten sessions of alpha-asymmetry or high-beta training reduced both depression and anxiety.
CONTROLLED STUDY | Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience. Twenty sessions of peak alpha training improved executive function and reduced depression and rumination.
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW | Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging. Across 12 studies, patients showed cognitive, clinical and brain-activity gains. Suggested as an add-on for people still struggling on medication.
EVIDENCE REVIEW | Neural Plasticity. Rated depression neurofeedback protocols 'possibly efficacious' (level 2 of 5), limited mainly by uncontrolled studies and a lack of exact replications.
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW | einstein (São Paulo). Neurofeedback reduced depression symptoms, but only some patients improved substantially, and session count did not predict results. Larger trials are needed.
- A medication-free approach that can be added to therapy or medication, with your provider's guidance.
- Non-invasive: sensors only read brain and heart signals. Nothing is sent into the brain.
- Targets specific brain patterns linked to low mood and rumination.
- Engaging: feedback comes through games, videos and sounds.
- At home with NeuFidelity: unlimited sessions, monitored remotely by our team.
A FEW HONEST CAVEATS
- Not everyone responds, and results vary from person to person.
- Many studies are small or uncontrolled, and protocols differ widely.
- Neurofeedback is studied mainly as an add-on, not a replacement for proven depression treatments.
- If you have thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 in the U.S. right away. Never stop or change medication without your prescriber.
HOW NEUFIDELITY APPROACHES IT
Every program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map. Protocols are matched to your own patterns, adjusted remotely as your data comes in, and checked with repeat assessments so you can see whether training is working for you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can neurofeedback replace antidepressants or therapy? No. Research supports it mainly as a complement. Talk with your prescriber before any change.
How many sessions does it take? Studies used about 10 to 20 or more sessions. Your plan depends on your brain map and progress.
What if I have both depression and anxiety? Several studies focused on exactly this combination and found improvements in both.
Is the evidence settled? No. It is promising but still growing, which is why we personalize training and measure your results.
Every NeuFidelity program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map, so your training is matched to your own brain. Talk with our team to see whether it fits you.
NeuFidelity provides non-invasive brain training. It is not a medical treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Individual results vary. Please consult your healthcare provider about any medical condition.
