Can brain training help memory and focus as we age? Here is a clear, honest look at the research on neurofeedback for healthy older adults and mild cognitive impairment, with links to every study.
with 284 older adults were pooled in a 2024 meta-analysis that linked neurofeedback to better working and episodic memory.
of total training was where memory gains became clear in that analysis. Shorter programs showed no reliable benefit.
memory gains from upper-alpha training in adults with mild cognitive impairment still held compared with sham (2021).
in dementia and cognitive impairment were reviewed in 2021. Most found cognitive gains, but randomized trials are still scarce.
Raising peak alpha frequency in older adults improved processing speed and executive function in a double-blind pilot (2007).
Neurofeedback is non-invasive and medication-free. It works best as part of a brain-healthy life: exercise, sleep, social time and medical care.
As we age, brain rhythms tend to slow. Peak alpha frequency drifts lower, and in mild cognitive impairment the balance shifts toward slower waves. Neurofeedback reads these rhythms in real time and rewards the brain, through a game, video or sound, whenever it produces faster, more organized activity. Over many sessions the brain learns to produce that pattern more easily.
The most-researched approaches are:
- Upper-alpha training: strengthens the rhythm linked to memory and mental readiness.
- Peak alpha frequency training: nudges the brain's natural tempo back up.
- Beta training: builds the faster activity tied to attention and working memory.
- SMR and theta training: used in several memory and attention studies.
Results look most promising for memory when training time is long enough, but most studies are still small. We share both the encouraging and the cautious findings below.

META-ANALYSIS | Medicina. Across 14 trials, neurofeedback improved working and episodic memory in healthy older adults and in mild cognitive impairment, especially with more than 300 minutes of training.
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW | Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. Ten studies in dementia and cognitive impairment. Most showed better test scores, but randomized evidence remains scarce.
SHAM-CONTROLLED TRIAL | Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. Upper-alpha training improved memory in adults with mild cognitive impairment versus sham, with gains lasting at least a month.
PILOT STUDY | Medicine. Five adults with mild cognitive impairment completed 16 beta-training sessions over 8 weeks and improved in memory, attention and executive function. Small and uncontrolled.
DOUBLE-BLIND PILOT | The Clinical Neuropsychologist. Raising peak alpha frequency in older adults improved processing speed and executive function, with no clear effect on memory.
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW | Psychophysiology. Found promising evidence that neurofeedback can boost executive function in healthy adults, but called for more rigorous, well-controlled studies to confirm it.
- A proactive, medication-free way to exercise the brain, alongside the habits that protect it.
- Non-invasive: sensors only read brain activity. Nothing is sent into the brain.
- Trains specific rhythms tied to memory, attention and mental speed.
- Engaging: feedback comes through games, videos and sounds.
- At home with NeuFidelity: no driving to a clinic, with sessions monitored remotely by our team.
A FEW HONEST CAVEATS
- Results vary, and most studies are small.
- Benefits appear to depend on enough training time, often more than 300 minutes in total.
- Neurofeedback has not been shown to prevent or slow dementia.
- It does not replace medical evaluation. See your doctor about any change in memory or thinking.
HOW NEUFIDELITY APPROACHES IT
Every program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map. Protocols are matched to your own patterns, adjusted remotely as your data comes in, and checked with repeat assessments so you can see whether training is working for you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can neurofeedback prevent Alzheimer's or dementia? No study has shown that. Research focuses on memory and attention scores, not prevention.
Is it safe for older adults? Neurofeedback only reads brain signals and is considered low-risk. Check with your doctor if you have a medical condition.
Do I need to be good with technology? No. We set up the equipment with you and our team monitors your sessions remotely.
Is the evidence settled? No. It is promising but still growing, which is why we personalize training and measure your results.
Every NeuFidelity program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map, so your training is matched to your own brain. Talk with our team to see whether it fits you.
NeuFidelity provides non-invasive brain training. It is not a medical treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Individual results vary. Please consult your healthcare provider about any medical condition.
