Neurofeedback for Trauma & PTSD

Trauma can leave the brain stuck in survival mode. Here is a careful, honest look at the research on neurofeedback for post-traumatic stress, including veterans and complex trauma, with links to every study.

Trauma & PTSD Research at a Glance

27% vs. 68%

Complex Trauma

27% vs. 68%

still met PTSD criteria after neurofeedback versus a wait-list group in a 2016 randomized trial of adults with chronic PTSD.

10 Trials

Complex Trauma

27% vs. 68%

with 276 participants were pooled in a 2023 meta-analysis that found a moderate drop in PTSD symptoms (effect size 0.74).

Complex Trauma

Complex Trauma

Complex Trauma

responded better than single-event trauma in that meta-analysis, and longer courses of training worked better than short ones.

40 Sessions

88% of Veterans

Complex Trauma

of neurofeedback reduced symptoms and improved emotional control in adults with treatment-resistant PTSD (2016 pilot).

88% of Veterans

88% of Veterans

88% of Veterans

with PTSD, brain injury and chronic pain stayed with at-home mobile neurofeedback for three months in a 2021 study.

Calmer Circuits

88% of Veterans

88% of Veterans

Brain scans showed alpha neurofeedback shifted fear-center connections toward emotion-regulation areas in PTSD (2016).

How Neurofeedback Addresses Trauma

Helping a Brain on High Alert Stand Down

After trauma, the brain's threat system can stay switched on long after the danger has passed. Many people with PTSD show reduced calming alpha activity and a fear center, the amygdala, that stays tightly linked to alarm and memory circuits. Neurofeedback reads brain activity in real time and rewards the brain, through a game, video or sound, when it settles into a calmer, more regulated pattern. With practice, regulation gets easier, without having to retell the trauma.

The most-researched approaches are:

- Alpha training: rebuilds the calming rhythm often reduced in PTSD.

- Right temporal-parietal training: used in the van der Kolk studies to ease hyperarousal and improve emotional control.

- Alpha-theta training: a deeply relaxed state used in some veteran programs.

Results are encouraging, especially for complex trauma, but most trials are small. We share both the promising and the cautious findings below.

Is Neurofeedback a Good Fit for You?

Why Trauma Survivors Explore It

- A non-talk, medication-free approach that can complement trauma-focused therapy.

- Non-invasive: sensors only read brain activity. Nothing is sent into the brain.

- Trains the brain's ability to calm itself, without having to revisit painful memories.

- Engaging: feedback comes through games, videos and sounds.

- At home with NeuFidelity: training in a familiar, safe space, monitored remotely by our team.

A FEW HONEST CAVEATS

- Results vary, and most PTSD trials are small.

- Neurofeedback is meant to complement trauma-focused therapy, not replace it.

- Some people notice temporary tiredness or headaches after sessions. Tell our team if this happens.

- It does not replace crisis care. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the U.S. right away.

HOW NEUFIDELITY APPROACHES IT

Every program starts with a Brain Map and Trait Map. Protocols are matched to your own patterns, adjusted remotely as your data comes in, and checked with repeat assessments so you can see whether training is working for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will I have to talk about my trauma? No. Neurofeedback trains brain activity directly. Many people pair it with therapy, where that work happens.

Does it help veterans and first responders? Several studies include veterans, with encouraging early results. Larger trials are still needed.

How many sessions does it take? Studies used roughly 20 to 40 sessions. Your plan depends on your brain map and progress.

Is the evidence settled? No. It is promising but still growing, which is why we personalize training and measure your results.

Is Neurofeedback Right for You?
